Home remedies are cheap and already in the cupboard. Here is what each one does to the smell, what it cannot reach, and when a rinse is all you need.
Why home remedies seem to work for a day
Each one can lower the smell at the surface for a few hours: vinegar by reacting with ammonia, rinse water by diluting it, and some by covering it with their own smell. None of them removes the urine residue in the infill and base. When it gets warm or wet again, bacteria keep turning the urea in that residue into ammonia (Cleanfax), and the smell returns.
Remedy by remedy
| Remedy | What it does to urine smell | Clears residue in the base? |
|---|---|---|
| Hose rinse | Flushes fresh urine and dilutes the smell | Not the buildup |
| Vinegar | Reacts with ammonia at the surface; leaves a vinegar smell | No |
| Baking soda | Little effect on ammonia; sits on top as a powder | No |
| Hydrogen peroxide | Breaks down into water and oxygen | No |
| Dish soap | Lifts surface grime; needs a thorough rinse | No |
| Bleach | Turf makers advise against it | No |
When a rinse is enough
For a fresh puddle, plenty of water right away is the right move: it carries most of the urine down and out before it dries. Make it a habit on the spots your dog uses. TigerTurf recommends hosing down favorite toileting spots weekly (TigerTurf).
When you need more than a rinse
If the yard smells on warm afternoons, after rain, or within days of a rinse, residue has built up below the blades. That needs a treatment soaked down to the base at dusk and left overnight. Urine Zero 10X is made for that job: one jug makes 10 gallons of spray, $10 a finished gallon. Mix it with water only; do not add vinegar or other cleaners. Here is how to apply it so it reaches the smell.

FAQ: Home remedies
Can I mix vinegar with Urine Zero?
No. Mix Urine Zero with water only, 1 part to 9. Other cleaners can reduce how well it works.
Does baking soda absorb the smell?
A little, where the powder sits. It does not neutralize ammonia and it does not reach the base.
What should I do right after my dog pees on the turf?
If you can, rinse the spot with plenty of water. It flushes most of the urine through before it dries.
Why does the smell come back after vinegar?
Vinegar acts on the ammonia at the surface. The urine residue below keeps making more ammonia when it gets warm or wet.
